In at the deep end; what can we learn from networking?
In the run up to my first Brighton Chamber networking event, I began to reflect on my previous networking experience and how I felt now venturing into the new world as ReWork Consulting.
I was surprised to feel a certain unease, which I soon realised was due to the fear of being judged. It felt similar to those occasions, you know the ones, like when you take on a new project/role and you start thinking that everyone else in the room knows more than you. Fear of judgement is so often wrapped up in your head, and isn’t a reflection of fact, so once you start focusing on actions, rather than what others ‘might’ be thinking, it can remove barriers, or at the very least reduce them.
So, to get out of my own head I began to prepare for the event.
Strengths not weaknesses
When attractions take on software procurement projects, there’s usually a significant knowledge gap in expertise. The knowledge required usually falls completely outside of the team’s comfort zones and normal job responsibilities.
I believe asking for help is a sign of strength not a weakness and the people that do seek out advice usually reap the benefits.
In business the people that stand out for me are the ones that have found the sweet spot between confidence and self belief, but don’t pretend to know everything.
By asking for advice prior to this event, provided me with the tools to be prepared. I knew what to expect and felt more relaxed on the day. Feeling relaxed and ultimately enjoying the experience, creates the best environment for connection, and I believe leaves a lasting positive impression.
So if you realise you have gaps in your knowledge why not reach out to someone that can help.
You never know, it could save you a lot of time, and provide you with the clarity to know that you’re heading in the right direction.
Please get in touch if you’ve identified a knowledge gap, that I can help you fill.
