Your Work… Why Does It Matter?
Why does it matter?
Recently I was asked the question ‘Why does what I do matter?
A huge question, but perhaps something we don’t ask ourselves enough?
In all honesty, when I initially thought about this in relation to ReWork Consulting, I scratched my head a little. But as soon as I moved the focus away from the day to day detail of what we do and thought about the bigger picture, it came to me like a moment of complete clarity.
We enable people to have fun!
If you work at an attraction, this might seem obvious, but perhaps as a consultant or a supplier this can sometimes be lost in translation. If we focus on ticketing software for example, fun wouldn’t be the first thing that would come to most people’s minds. However, if you remove the solution, or it’s not performing as efficiently as it could be, it detracts from the overall customer experience of creating joy.
For some, fun/joy means scaring yourself witless at a theme park, but for others it could be a peaceful walk around a garden, a day at the zoo, or even a visit to a museum or gallery. One thing all these activities have in common is they visitors get to experience pleasure, therefore as a sector we are in the industry of creating joy.
Reflected in the words of Jakob Wahl, Executive Vice President and Chief Operations Officer of IAPPA;
“Actually, our only purpose is bringing joy to the people. And there are not many industries out there which can say that for themselves.”
During the pandemic there’s been significant research conducted on the impact museums have on people’s wellbeing. Furthering the evidence that perhaps joy is just the tip of the iceberg, and what we are really creating is a deeper impact on the mental health of society, as outlined in this article from the New York Times. I personally love the idea from this writer, that we should be finding our fun magnets!
So the next time you’re creating a job advert, conducting someone’s interview, delivering a training session or a demo/presentation, I wonder what might happen if you give a little thought to ‘why what we do matters?’
